Field

Sarek has no marked trails and no shelter above the birch line. Rain there does not fall; it travels. The hood on the shell closes to a visor with one gloved hand, because two were never available.

A river is wider than it looks from the bank; every crossing teaches that once. The pack's roll-top and welded liner date from one that went badly, in a season the maps call dry.

Under the birches at Abisko the temperature moved eleven degrees in an afternoon. The merino in the tee and the socks is spun heavier than the market prefers. It was chosen for that afternoon.
